About Us
Providing Ground-Source Water Management, Project Assessment and Monitoring
History
Water for Africa was founded in 2003 by professional philanthropic business people in the UK, who worked in a variety of backgrounds. Using their own money, business experience and resources, they aimed to create a fiscal model which placed the resources and responsibility back within Africa, whilst being supported by the management team in the UK
The organisation was set up in 2003 as a non-for-profit organisation, the founders provided the capital outlay to purchase a state of the art drilling machine, trucks, vehicles, office supplies and drilling consumables, shipping them to The Gambia.
They then set up a training academy to train a team of local people in a variety of disciplines, implemented and empowered a strong management team and set up a stringent budget and accounability policy. In 2006, the organisation became a registered charity in the UK.
Why Boreholes?
Water For Africa has now worked to provide over 95 communities with boreholes to provide clean, reliable water systems.
All of our boreholes are drilled to enable them to be upgraded to a fully integrated water system, from a hand-pump to a solar powered irrigation system.
Boreholes can be drilled to greater depths, more efficiently and more quickly, tapping into deeper 'aquifers', which avoid the challenges facing traditional 'hand dug' open wells, not consistently providing water during the dry months.
Boreholes can provide a safe and reliable source of water for the whole community and avoid the risk of cross contamination of water bourne diseases and livestock.
Boreholes are safe for all community members to use, both women and children can gain easy and quick access to water, without the risk of accidents and deaths from falling into the water source.
