From Acorns to Oaks...
The founder members of 'Water for Africa' were heavily involved in corporate life, when, during a chance conversation in a restaurant, they heard of the plight of a village in The Gambia and determined to do something about it. They went out to Africa and used their own time, effort and money to purchase a state of the art drilling machine to create a borehole and provide the village with clean, healthy water and help the villagers cultivate crops to feed themselves.
This gave them such personal satisfaction that they either shelved their careers or took time out to establish 'Water for Africa' and work in Africa on a number of water and health projects.
A team of dedicated local specialists was recruited and trained to work with and support 'Water for Africa'.
Since then, the founders have witnessed the dramatic difference that water and health programmes make to poor communities and have overcome many obstacles and challenges to expand an organisation that concentrates on sustainable rural development.
From humble beginnings, 'Water for Africa' has seen its vision become a reality. It has concentrated its activities in Gambia, West Africa and has provided life-preserving facilities to over 80 communities to the benefit of 325,000 people.
The organisation has achieved its tremendous record of ensuring that over 75% of donations reach the people they are intended to benefit by focussing its efforts on what brings the greatest benefit for the smallest expenditure.
All programmes and areas of work concentrate on providing clean water for people, sustainable agricultural projects and health and prevention of disease.
